RESUMO

Abstract Transplanting time and genotype contribute to improving crop yield and quality of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). A field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of foliar applied of triacontanol (TRIA) and eggplant genotypes 25919, Nirala, 28389 and Pak-10927,transplanted on 1 March,15 March, and 1 April on exposure to high air temperature conditions. The experiment was performed according to Randomized Complete Block Design and the data was analyzed by using Tuckey,s test . The TRIA was applied at 10µM at flowering stage; distilled water was used as the control. Rate of photosynthesis and transpiration, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and effects on antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase) were evaluated. The 10µM TRIA increased photosynthesis rate and water use efficiency and yield was improved in all genotypes transplanted at the different dates. Foliar application of 10µM TRIA increased antioxidative enzyme activities (SOD, POD & CAT) and improved physiological as well as biochemical attributes of eggplant genotypes exposed to high heat conditions. Highest activity of dismutase enzyme 5.41mg/1g FW was recorded in Nirala genotype in second transplantation. Whereas, lowest was noted in PAK-10927 (2.30mg/g FW). Maximum fruit yield was found in accession 25919 (1.725kg per plant) at 1st transplantation with Triacontanol, whereas accession PAK-10927 gave the lowest yield (0.285 kg per plant) at control treatment on 3rd transplantation. Genotype, transplanting date and application of TRIA improved growth, yield and quality attributes under of heat stress in eggplant.

Present study was planned to determine variations in external and internal quality egg parameters of different avian species including ostrich Struthio camelus, ducks Anas platyrhynchos, chicken Gallus gallus, turkeys Meleagris gallopavo and grey francolin Francolinus pondicerinus. All the birds were kept under similar rearing conditions. A total of 150 eggs were collected for each species to record external features of these eggs. Statistically significant (p<0.05) variations were recorded in egg weight, egg length and egg width between ostrich, ducks, chicken, turkey and quail eggs. Significantly (p<0.05) higher egg weight, egg length and egg width was observed for ostrich eggs while the same was lowest for grey francolin eggs. Similarly, significantly (p<0.05) greater shape index and egg volume values were observed for ostrich eggs while lowest shape index values were recorded for turkey eggs and egg volume was lowest for grey francolin. Significantly, higher (p<0.05) values of egg density were noted for eggs of the quail and the same were lowest for ostrich eggs. Non-significant variations in egg density values were observed between eggs of the ducks, chicken, turkey and grey francolin. It has been concluded that the positive correlations between the internal and external egg quality traits indicated that the traits can be improved through selection.

RESUMO

Background: Authors tend to compare the medical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia with the surgical option regarding lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and related psychological morbidity. Methods: A retrospective study of (1614) patients who were managed by either transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) or medical treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) over a period of 5 years between (Sep. 2013 and Sep. 2018) carried out in Prince Hussein Urology Center at Jordanian Royal Medical Services. Patients were classified into two groups, group1 (807 patients) who get a medical option and group 2 (807 patients who underwent TURPs. A comparison between both groups according to the effect of minimizing the psychological morbidities was done over a period of 1-year follow-up after reviewing the patient’s medical records. Results: Ages of the patients for group1 and 2 were (47-68 years), (49-73 years), respectively. There were significant differences at the level of depression, anxiety and psychiatric morbidity pre-treatment between both groups p-value <0.05, and no significant differences after treatment in group 1 regarding these levels, p-value>0.05, but significant differences in the level of improvement after treatment between both groups and in group 2 were found, p-value <0.05.Conclusions: The severity of LUTS and psychological morbidity have a positive relationship and were higher in the pretreatment surgical group, but the effect of TURP was superior to the medical group in the management of this morbidity and its causative (LUTS).

RESUMO

A series of chalcones 3–5, 1H-pyrazolines 6–8, N-phenylpyrazolines 9–11, and N-acetylpyrazolines 12–14incorporating benzofuran and pyrazole moieties were synthesized and screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activityagainst some of pathogenic microorganisms. Among the screened compounds, 7 and 13 showed the most promisingantibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (G-). Compound 11 displayed broad spectrum antibacterial activityagainst Bacillus subtilis (G+). Moreover, compounds 10 and 4 were found to be the most potent antifungal agentagainst Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, respectively. Also, the molecular properties prediction and druglikeness model score (DLS) of all the synthesized compounds were calculated by SwissADME and MolSoft websites, respectively. The two compounds 7 and 13 were found to be maximum DLS of 0.75 and 0.83, respectively.

RESUMO

Bachground /aim Coronary artery imaging is one of the most commonly used diagnostic methods. We aimed to investigate whether there is a correlation between left main coronary artery (LMCA), left anterior descending artery (LAD) and left circumflex artery (LCx) artery dimensions in normal cases and a possibility to express the coronary dimensions by multiple linear equations. Materials and methods Images of coronary angiograms of 925 normal cases selected from 3855 cases made up the study population (515 men and 410 women; age range, 30–75 years). The mean age of the patients was 55.50 ± 6.49 years. The mean body mass index was 24.79 ± 1.45 kg/m2 (range, 31.30–21.26 kg/m2). The mean dimensions of LMCA, LAD and LCx were 4.18 ± 0.65 mm, 3.22 ± 0.63 mm and 3.07 ± 0.65 mm, respectively. Correlation between LMCA, LAD and LCx diameters was investigated. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to develop a model to elucidate the relationship between LMCA, LAD and LCx diameters. Results There was a strong correlation between LMCA dimensions and LAD and LCx dimensions (r = 0.526**, p < 0.001* and r = 0.469**, p < 0.001*, respectively). The positive correlation indicated that a regression analysis can be carried out by incorporating the measurements. Coronary artery dimensions were gender specific. Conclusion The present study explored the possibility of explaining the relationship with the LMCA and its branches by multiple linear equations, which may then be used to estimate the reference diameter of a stenosed coronary artery when the other two arteries are normal.

RESUMO

Background: Despite the advances in technology in urology practice, and the surgical approach in dealing with iatrogenic vesicovaginal fistula repair, the most important is to achieve continent rate with minimum morbidity. Methods: From January 2006 to December 2017, the medical records and operative notes of 52 female (mean age 37 year) who had undergone transabdominal transvesical operative repair of their vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) at this institution were reviewed retrospectively. CT urography and diagnostic cystourethroscopy were the modalities of diagnostic tools. Trans-abdominal, transvesical repair with omental flap interposition were performed within 4-6 months in all cases. Patients were evaluated at two to three weeks initially, then at three months interval and later annually. Results: In present study, the most common presentation of VVF was urine leakage through vagina. In two third of the patients the etiology was due to hysterectomy procedure, regarding the location of the fistula, 94.2% of the fistulas located high in the posterior wall of the urinary bladder (supratrigonal), with the mean size of 2.2cm (range 5-25mm). 49 patients had single fistula (94.2%). The mean operative time was 110 minutes (range 60-130 minutes) and the mean post-operative urethral catheterization was 21 days (range 17-24 days). Almost all patients were continent after a mean of five months. Conclusions: Iatrogenic VVF is one of the distressing complications of gynecological procedure; delayed transabdominal transvesical approach with omental flap interposition is associated with excellent and durable results with minor morbidity. Standardization of the technique is a key success in the outcome of the repair.

RESUMO

Background: Bony jaw lesions have varied radiographic appearance and may pose difficulty in establishing radiographicdifferential diagnosis. Computed tomography is a useful tool to facilitate the correct diagnosis of these bony lesions. Objectives: To compare the volumetric measurement of bony lesions of the jaw using two commercially available softwaresfor the evaluation of CT imaging. Material and Methods: All patients were subjected for multi-slice CT scanning. Thevolumetric measurements were performed using two softwares; Myrian and Siemens. Results: This study was conducted on15 patients of both genders; males (66.7%) and females (33.3%), where 21 diagnosed lesions with an intra-bony spaceaffecting one or both of the jaws were included in the measurements. Myrian software showed statistically lower mean ofvolumetric measurement than Somatom (P-value <0.001). Conclusion: Although, Myrian software showed statisticallylower mean of volumetric measurement than Somatom. The clinicalrelevance of these finding still needs to be determined infuture studies. Thus, both softwares can still be useful diagnostic tool for volumetric measurements.

RESUMO

Kato-Katz technique is widely used for the diagnosis of Fecal-orally transmitted helminthic infections. It is relatively simple and inexpensive. However, a single slide prepared from a single stool specimen has low sensitivity, particularly in light infections. Therefore, there is a great need for concentration techniques. This study detected an accurate and affordable method for diagnosis of fecal-orally transmitted helminthes and other geohelminthes. The study was carried out on 217 stool samples of different sex and age groups. Stool samples were collected from different urban and rural areas in Sharkia Governorate. Stool samples were examined macroscopically and analyzed by different parasitological techniques: direct wet mount [DWM], Kato-Katz thick smear, spontaneous sedimentation in tube technique [SSTT] and formol ether sedimentation technique [FEC]. The results showed that formol ether sedimentation method detected 59 positive samples followed by spontaneous sedimentation in tube technique [48/59 positive samples]. FEC showed significant difference when compared to direct wet mount and Kato-Katz thick smear. SSTT also showed significant difference when compared to DWM [P <0.05].The overall prevalence of intestinal helminthes was [29.6%] among studied samples in Sharkia Governorate. The commonest helminthic infection was H. nana [12%] followed by E. vemicularis [10%] then A. lumbricoides [3.7%]

RESUMO

To investigate the use of unconventional substances and materials in water pipe among café water pipe smokers. This was a questionnaire-based survey among subjects attending coffee shops in the region of Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia between February and March 2013. We invited 110 subjects, only 90 consented to participate in the study. A percentage of 1.1% used fluids other than water in the water pipe tank, 18.9% added other soft drinks to the tank, and 7.8% added flowers, spices or drugs to the tobacco mix placed in the head of the water pipe. A proportion of participants used fruits to replace the water pipe head [12.2%], or to replace water pipe tank [4.4%]. Higher number of children the smokers had and cafe smoking were all significantly associated with unconventional practices. A substantial percentage of sample of water pipe smokers in Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia use unusual materials and/or substances in the water pipe and this is probably encouraged by cafe smoking

RESUMO

The three phases of living donor liver transplantation [LDLT] represent different liver conditions. The aim is to study the required end-tidal desflurane concentration [ET-Des] guided with entropy monitoring for the depth of anesthesia. After the Ethics and Research Committee approval, 40 patients were included in this prospective study. Anesthesia was maintained with Desflurane-O2-air. State entropy [SE] and Response entropy [RE] were kept between 40 and 60. Age and Model for End-stage Liver Disease [MELD] score were 45 +/- 10 years and 15.43 +/- 3.92, respectively. ET-Des were significantly lower in the anhepatic phase [2.8 +/- 0.4%] than in the pre-anhepatic and neohepatic phases [3.3 +/- 0.3%, 3.47 +/- 0.3%, respectively, P<0.001]. The SE and RE for pre-anhepatic, anhepatic, and neohepatic phases were [45.6 +/- 3.7, 47.4 +/- 3.2], [44.7 +/- 2.1, 46.4 +/- 2.04], and [46.1 +/- 3.3, 47.9 +/- 3.3], respectively, with no significant changes between the phases, P > 0.05. Total operative time was 651 +/- 88 minutes, and for each phase it was 276 +/- 11, 195 +/- 55, and 191 +/- 24 minutes, respectively. Significant changes were found in hemoglobin g/dl and hematocrit% between the three phases [10.28 +/- 1.5, 30.48 +/- 4.3], [9.45 +/- 1.34, 28.36 +/- 4.1], and [8.88 +/- 1.1, 26.63 +/- 3.5], P<0.05. The heart rate and mean blood pressures were stable despite the cardiac index demonstrated a significant reduction during the anhepatic phase [2.99 +/- 0.22] when compared to the pre-anhepatic and neohepatic phases [3.60 +/- 0.29] and [4.72 +/- 0.32], respectively, [P<0.05]. There was a significant correlation between CI and ET-Des% [r=0.604, P<0.05]. Inhalational anesthetic requirements differed from one phase to another during LDLT, with requirements being the least during the anhepatic phase. Monitoring of the anesthesia depth was required, to avoid excess administration, which could compromise the hemodynamics before the critical time of reperfusion

RESUMO

Schistosomiasis is a chronic debilitating parasitic disease. Long-term repeated use of praziquantel [PZQ] for control of the disease morbidity may lead to resistance or reduced susceptibility to the drug. Artemether [ART], the anti-malarial drug may become an alternative therapy to PZQ as it also displays anti-schistosomal properties. To assess the effects of artemether experimentally on prepatent [juvenile worms] and patent [adult worms] Schistosoma mansoni infection. Three groups each composed of twenty mice were used in the study. The first group [prepatent infection] was treated with double dose of ART [each 400 mg/kg] three and four weeks post infection [PI], the second group [patent infection] was treated with the same dose at six and seven weeks PI and the third group represented the infected control group. The effect of the drug was assessed by parasitological, histopathological and ultrastructural studies. It was found that ART significantly decreased the number of worms and their body sizes in treated mice groups. It also decreased the tissue egg load and decreased the granuloma size in the liver of mice in the second group. It had a more potent effect on juvenile worms [group 1] as no or few fibrous granulomas appeared in the tissues. Scanning electron microscope revealed swelling and erosion of the tubercles with breaks in some areas of the tegument in both groups of treated mice groups. The oral sucker showed breaks and focal lysis of the underlying muscle fibers. Artemether is an effective drug against Schistosoma mansoni infection. It has schistosomicidal and ovicidal effects and hence anti-pathologic activities especially in those treated early after infection [3 and 4 weeks PI]. Additional clinical studies using artemether in different epidemiologic settings with higher doses as well as future trials to study its ability to prevent reinfection and against S. hematobium are also recommended

RESUMO

Precise prognostication of breast cancer based on immunohistochemical features is a challenging assay. Thus, there is a need for more sophisticated prognostic determinants. This work aims to investigate the sensitivity of flow cytometry for the accurate evaluation of steroid receptor positive, tumor cells in formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections. These sections from forty breast cancer patients were subjected to multiparametric flow cytometric analysis for simultaneous assessment of estrogen receptor and DNA content analysis as well as immunohistochemical staining for steroid receptors. Moreover, tumor markers were estimated in the preoperable sera of these patients. About fifty seven percent of tumors were aneuploid. Seven tumors were interpreted positive for ER by FCM and negative by IHC. Flow cytometric results were confirmed by the traditional prognostic factors. Higher levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 occurred predominantly in aneuploid tumors with lymph nodal metastasis and positively immunostained for both estrogen and progesterone receptors. Multiparametric flow cytometric analysis may allows the detection of specific subset of patients that would otherwise escapes detection

RESUMO

Although essential before surgery, in-lab lysomnography and in-hospital sleep studies cannot be done indiscriminately for all patients with potential diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea [OSA]. Some clinical parameters may be used to select patients for these studies, thus increasing their cost-effectiveness. Studying the relationship of body mass index [BMI], modified Mallampati index [MMI], tonsil size and thyroid-mental distance [TMD] to the grade of OSA. Tertiary referral hospital. Thirty consecutive patients [20 men and 10 women] in the age range of 30 to 60 years with snoring for at least 3 months and observed cessation of respiration during sleep were included. SAM[TM] monitor [Intercare Technologies, Inc, Milwaukee, WI] was used for an eight-hour in-hospital sleep study. There was a statistically significant relationship between BMI, MMI and tonsil grade and the grade of OSA [p=0.01, p=0.036, p=0.05 respectively]. No statistically significant relationship was found between TMD and grade of OSA [p=0.456]. In patients with potential diagnosis of OSA, BMI, MMI and tonsil size grade are helpful in selecting patients for in-hospital sleep studies
